Tuition and Fees

The tuition and fees listed below are in effect for courses that begin between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.

Individually paced courses

Tuition for individually paced courses is based on the amount of time selected. Students who complete a course with five or more business days remaining in their enrollment may use the extra time to begin another individually paced course. Students who have not completed their course when their enrollment time ends may pay to re-enroll for more time. Most math courses, chess, most computer science and technology, science, and writing courses are individually paced.

The following tuitions are in effect for individually paced course enrollments that start July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021.

  • 3 months tuition: $860
  • 6 months tuition: $1,665
  • 9 months tuition: $2,385

In addition to the 3, 6, or 9 month options, students who are extending their enrollment to finish an individually paced course may apply for a 1 month extension for $310 (tuition), plus the $15 Application Fee discussed below. The application fee may be waived if the student's enrollment period has not yet expired at the time the student applies for an extension. The 1 month tuition option is only available to students who are extending their enrollment in an unfinished individually paced course. The 1-month extension is not available to students who are enrolling into new individually paced courses.

Session-based courses

Tuition varies by course. AP, forensics, engineering, English language development, grammar, critical reading, NCAA-approved math, NCAA-approved science, visual fluency, world languages, and writing courses are session-based.

L.I.V.E. courses

The tuition for each CTY L.I.V.E. course is $1,000 per session. Students can expect to spend an additional $25 to $50 on books and supplies. Details will be shared with enrolled students in advance of the course start date. The course catalog provides information about classes that require more significant software or learning kit purchases.

Limited financial aid is available for CTY L.I.V.E. courses. To apply for financial aid, check the program application box that says I will be applying for Financial Aid. For more information on the documents you will need when applying, read our Financial Aid FAQs.

Fees for all courses

$15 Non-refundable Application Fee: required for all applicants, including those who are extending an individually paced enrollment
$20 Non-refundable International Fee: required for all students living outside the United States (If the cost of shipping materials outside of the United States is above this amount, the excess cost will be charged directly to the student's account)
$25 Late Application Fee: for session-based courses only
$25 Course Change Fee: Course changes are generally not possible except when CTY determines that the student should be placed at a different level, in which case the fee is waived. If a course change is requested for another reason, and the change is approved by CTY, the course change fee is applied.

Full payment of tuition and fees must accompany the application. Payment may be made by check, money order, MasterCard, Discover, or Visa. Students may enroll only after all past due balances are paid (including balances from other CTY programs). Payments are applied to oldest balances first and then to current application requirements. Applications cannot be processed without payment and will be returned.

Refund policies and procedures

Parents and/or guardians can receive an 80 percent tuition refund by submitting a written withdrawal request to CTY no later than two weeks after the course start date. Students who withdraw from a course prior to the start date will receive a full refund of tuition paid. Refunds may take up to five business days to process for electronic payment. Paper check refunds take two to four weeks to process from the time that withdrawal notification is received by the CTY Registrar. Application fees will not be refunded. Send withdrawal requests to ctyonline@jhu.edu.

Students who withdraw or fail to participate after the two-week withdrawal period are not eligible for refunds. Students who violate the Student Code of Conduct may be withdrawn from the program without refund.

Refund policy for L.I.V.E. courses

Families wishing to withdraw from a CTY L.I.V.E. course must submit a written request to ctyenrollment@jhu.edu.

Families withdrawing from a CTY L.I.V.E. course must submit their in-writing request two weeks before the first day of class to receive a 100% tuition-only refund. CTY L.I.V.E. application fees are non-refundable. CTY L.I.V.E. courses depend on cohort-based classes, and they  are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. For this reason, all amounts paid are non-refundable two weeks before the first day of class.

Refunds will be returned via the original form of payment. Families may expect to see their electronic refunds within 5 to 7 business days of the withdrawal request. Paper check refunds may take up to 2-3 weeks.

Questions concerning the status of a refund may be sent to ctyar@jhu.edu or 800-393-6095, option 1.

Note about textbooks

Some courses require the separate purchase of a textbook or other course materials. See the specific course description for details. If your course requires the purchase of materials, please order the materials well in advance of the start date.
