During this Inventions mini course, we’ll explore the principles of invention by focusing on Rube Goldberg machines, an intentionally intricate device that executes a simple task through a series of elaborate, indirect steps. Named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who was famous for illustrating such whimsical contraptions, these machines operate via chain reactions to accomplish straightforward actions, like turning a page, cracking an egg, or switching on a light. Students will delve into the mechanics of Rube Goldberg machines, experimenting with building their own models to understand the science behind these contraptions. You’ll uncover the magic of invention and apply creative thinking while engaging in discussions and problem-solving with peers in our virtual classroom, then do hands-on work in your own time.
Time commitment: 2.5-3.5 hours per week (1.5 hours of class time, 1-2 hours of independent work). Course will include 3 sessions over 3 weeks.

About Science and Engineering at CTY
Our Science and Engineering courses bring a variety of science topics to life. By introducing topics not covered in standard science curricula, we build and reinforce your science knowledge. All courses support critical thinking, problem solving, and reasoning, and encourage a hands-on approach to learning about Earth, space, life sciences, chemistry, and the physical world. Guided by expert CTY science educators, you’ll perform hands-on experiments using common household objects, and participate in dynamic group discussions.
