About the Course

Geometry and Spatial Sense

Geometric and spatial reasoning skills are essential for living in and making sense of the world. Everything from solving a jigsaw puzzle to arranging furniture to efficiently packing a suitcase requires these abilities. In this course, we’ll learn and practice these skills as we delve into the mathematical relationships between objects—ones that include congruence and symmetry, reflection and rotation, or expansion and contraction.

We’ll explore the geometric properties of regular polygons and the so-called platonic solids, rigorously investigating relationships between area, circumference, and volume. We’ll extend our knowledge and understanding of shapes and patterns as they relate to two- and three-dimensional space. Exercise hands-on investigation, collaboration, and discussion as you and your classmates explore the properties of geometric structures and understand that physical, geometric, and analytic patterns are all connected.

Time commitment: 2.5-3.5 hours per week (1.5 hours of class time, 1-2 hours of independent work). Course will include 6 sessions over 6 weeks.
