What we'll do

We’ll extend your knowledge and understanding of shapes and patterns as they relate to 2- and 3-dimensional space. The course consists of nine units; each includes a synchronous group meeting held on Zoom, and asynchronous activities such as assigned readings, videos, worksheets, discussion forums, and projects.

What we’ll learn

• We will learn how nature follows math and science to create simple and complex designs
• We’ll see that physical, geometric, and analytic patterns are all connected. For example, the Golden Spiral, the Fibonacci series of numbers, and the Golden Ratio are a way of connecting the natural world, an arithmetic pattern, a geometric design, and an algebraic analysis, similarly with tessellations and the Pythagorean Theorem

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Identify various shapes and calculate their perimeters, areas, and volumes
• Create and solve various puzzles
• Understand why some regular polygons fill space and others do not
• Use different mapping systems to label locations

How we'll measure learning

Each student will design one slide for a class slide show. In their slide, students will design a logo that incorporates at least 2 projects that we learned in class: a tessellation, a mandala, an astrid, a hexaflexagon, soma cubes/pentiminoes or a Platonic solid/3D shape. Students will write short paragraphs discussing what they learned about these topics and why they chose the 2-3 they used and why they didn’t choose the other 3-4 projects.
