About the Course

Art Meets Science: Literature

In this creative writing course, we’ll explore poetry, fiction, drama, and non-literary works that use science as inspiration. After reading scientific poems, science fiction short stories, and a play about a scientist’s life, we’ll experiment with your own writing in these genres, using our course readings as models. You will also plan and realize a Capstone Creative Project that combines both art and science.

This course includes written forum discussions of lessons and readings, as well as asynchronous workshops in which you and your peers offer constructive feedback on each other’s writing. By the end of the course, you will understand how to create literature using scientific themes, the many intersections between art and science, and how these fields examine the same complex and unfolding universe.

Time Commitment: 4-6 hours of independent work per week.

This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.
