About the Course

Explore the African continent, from pre-history through 1500 CE. In this course, we will discover how geography and climate shaped emerging societies, their cultures, and migrations. We will identify the commonalities and differences among Africa's ancient civilizations, trading empires, and medieval cities. We will explore the legacies of cultural, scientific, and artistic achievement and analyze key moments in early African history to discern their past and present significance for African cultures, traditions, and belief systems. Students will draw on a wide array of historical thinking skills including writing, critical reading, argumentation, evidence usage, and historical reasoning to compare and contrast the past and present.

The content in Young Historians: Exploring Africa overlaps with the CTY course Young Historians at Continents: Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
