About the Course
In this course, you will become familiar with traditional Greek myths and examine how modern authors draw upon Greek sources to create exciting new adventures. Along the way, you will learn critical reading skills, write persuasive arguments, and even create your own short stories! Your instructor will guide and challenge you with individualized weekly feedback. Persuasive writing assignments will push you to make inferences, evaluate arguments, and learn to use credible evidence to support your claims. Creative writing assignments will ask you to take on different points of view and examine your writing style to create more vivid, compelling stories. You will also learn about issues ranging from fairness and inclusion to the role literature can play in advancing social justice. Packed with adventure and enticing academic challenges, this course is a journey into the magical and timeless world of Greek myths that any reader will enjoy.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate reading comprehension of literature, such as stories, dramas, and poetry by independently answering factual questions about elements of the text
- Determine two or more central ideas in informational texts and analyze their development over the course of the text
- Determine a theme or central idea of a piece of literature and analyze its development over the course of the text
- Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, nuances in word meanings, and analyze their meaning in context
- Use technology, including the Internet, to engage in written discourse and interact and collaborate with others
- Construct effective persuasive writing pieces that support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence
- Construct narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events, using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences
