About the Course

This Skillshop Challenge is for students who have some foundation in competitive math to deepen their understanding and prepare for competitions. Students and their classmates will tackle challenging problems together and develop effective competition strategies to prepare for events like the AMC 8. The course will culminate in a class competition, providing a friendly environment for students to test their knowledge with classmates.

Learning Objectives

  • Solve advanced-level problems in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, counting, and probability, deepening their understanding of concepts commonly featured in middle school math competitions like the AMC 8
  • Apply strategic thinking and test-taking techniques to improve performance in timed competitive math environments
  • Collaborate with peers to explore multiple problem-solving approaches, fostering mathematical communication and teamwork
  • Analyze and reflect on problem-solving processes, investigate various solution pathways and collaborate on the most efficient and effective methods
  • Demonstrate readiness for math competitions by participating in a culminating internal contest that simulates real competitive experiences in a supportive setting

Skillshop Challenge courses build community among learners with shared interests by providing a space for exploration and skill development. These courses culminate in an accomplishment such as a capstone project or in the completion of a competitive goal.

Requirements

CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.

Families will be notified by email of any required materials one week prior to the course start date.

Time Commitment: 2.5-3.5 hours per week (1.5 hours of class time, 1-2 hours of independent work). The course will include 6 sessions over 6 weeks.
