About the Course

This course is an introduction to human biology and the science of medicine, drawing upon basic biological and chemical concepts to explore the intricate anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying normal human function. You and your classmates will investigate homeostatic imbalances that cause diseases, learn about diabetes and gain an in-depth understanding of the endocrine system, the pancreas, the metabolism of sugar, and the biochemical effects of glucose. Lab work covers techniques in histology, anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology, including dissections. By the end of the course, you'll be able to read critically and respond thoughtfully to articles in scientific journals and the popular media.

Typical Class Size: 18-20

Learning Objectives

  • Model the interrelatedness of three body systems working to maintain homeostasis in the human body
  • Using examples from each level of organization of the human body (cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems), prove that structures of the human body dictate the function(s) of the human body
  • Research a disease or dysfunction that can impact a human body system, share the cause(s), how it disrupts homeostasis, how it might manifest in the form of data, and provide contrast to a proper functioning system
  • Apply three to five different medical techniques and/or applications used by medical professionals to diagnose and/or treat patients
  • Demonstrate the skills and tools necessary to complete a scientific dissection by observing and critiquing the dissection skills of co-researchers, based on a peer-developed set of criteria
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook of scientific observations and experiments to include procedures, independent/dependent variables and controls, appropriate measurements, data collection and analysis and data-supported conclusions

About Advanced Enrichment courses

These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges.

Requirements

CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
