About the Course
This Skillshop Challenge is for students who have some experience in competitive math and want to deepen their understanding and prepare for competitions. We will focus on building a strong foundation in areas like algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. You and your classmates will tackle challenging problems together and develop effective competition strategies to prepare for events like the AMC 10 and AMC 12. The course will culminate in a class competition, providing a friendly environment for students to test their knowledge with classmates.
The content in Advanced Competitive Math overlaps with the CTY courses High School Competitive Math Prep and High School Competitive Math I. Students who have already taken these courses may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before selecting this course.
Learning Objectives
- Solve problems using advanced theorem and techniques in algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics—core areas featured in high school math competitions such as the AMC 10 and AMC 12
- Apply strategic thinking and test-taking techniques to improve performance in timed competitive math environments
- Collaborate with peers to explore multiple problem-solving approaches, fostering mathematical communication and teamwork
- Analyze and reflect on problem-solving processes, identifying strengths and areas for growth through peer feedback and guided discussion
- Demonstrate readiness for math competitions by participating in a culminating internal contest that simulates a real competitive experience in a supportive setting
About Advanced Enrichment courses
These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. Students work individually and may finish the course early if they complete all requirements before the course end date.
Requirements
CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
