About the Course
What if you could design something that changes how people live, play, or work? Architects do just that! In this course, we will explore the world of architecture through history, science, math, and language arts. We’ll experiment like engineers, measure like mathematicians, and think critically about how buildings and spaces shape our lives. We will study the foundations of architecture, learn about influential architects, and see how design reflects culture and function. Through hands-on investigations, you’ll learn form, structure, stability, and sustainability, and apply these concepts to your own designs.
Throughout the course, we will record observations, reflect on our learning, and share ideas through journals, discussions, and presentations. Finally, you’ll apply your new knowledge and skills to individual and group design challenges that encourage creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving while building scale models and thoughtful, purposeful structures.
Learning Objectives
- Apply geometric concepts, such as measurement, proportion, ratios, scale, and shapes to create architectural drawings and build scale models
- Investigate and explain scientific principles such as forces, material properties, and sustainability and demonstrate an understanding of how those principles apply to architecture
- Identify, describe, and explain how architectural elements contribute to a building’s form, function, and stability and determine the best way to incorporate those elements into designs and models
About Advanced Enrichment courses
These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. Students work individually and may finish the course early if they complete all requirements before the course end date.
Requirements
CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
