About the Course

How do filmmakers transform basic geometric shapes into your favorite animated characters? How are animators able to portray those characters moving smoothly across the screen? How might an animator reduce the time needed to create a crowd scene? The answer to each of these questions is the same, through mathematics! In this course, we'll learn basic concepts related to animation and motion, explore how mathematical tools and elements help animators reach their artistic goals, and use examples from actual films and shows to explore topics such as coordinate geography, linear algebra, and combinatorics. Through film analysis, group activities, discussions, and individual assignments, we will discover the importance of mathematics to animators and the role it plays in their work. Time commitment: 2.5-3.5 hours per week (1.5 hours of class time, 1-2 hours of independent work). Course will include 6 sessions over 6 weeks. Course Overview Learning Objectives: Describe specific mathematical tools, elements, and methods that are involved in the everyday work of creating animations Connect elements of mathematics to creativity and artistic design in animations Perform calculations similar to those used by animators in their work About Advanced Enrichment Courses These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. The content in Mathematics of Movie Magic overlaps with the CTY course Mathematics of Pixar. Students who have already taken Mathematics of Pixar may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before enrolling in this course.
