About the Course

Reasoning, logic, and critical thinking are the building blocks of intellectual inquiry. In this course, we'll focus on developing these skills as you are introduced to the idea of mathematical proofs and deductive logic through problem solving and exposure to a wide range of topics in mathematics. Foundational tools such as truth tables, logic trees, and Venn diagrams help you explore ideas of validity, consistency, and sound reasoning. Along the way, you'll extend your knowledge and understanding of the different types of reasoning as it pertains to mathematics, logic, and critical thinking in general.

The content in Math Meets Logic: Discovering Proofs overlaps with the CTY course Mathematical Proofs. Students who have already taken Mathematical Proofs may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before selecting this course.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply inductive reasoning to number sequences, analyze the patterns, and formulate rules to generate the next terms in the sequence
  • Compare and contrast inductive and deductive reasoning
  • Evaluate logical statements by analyzing the outcomes from truth tables and from their own reasoning
  • Translate statements and arguments into symbolic logic propositions and construct truth tables to display the outcomes

About Advanced Enrichment courses

These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. Students work individually and may finish the course early if they complete all requirements before the course end date.

Requirements

CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
