About the Course
In this course, you’ll be introduced to the exciting world of elementary math competitions in a supportive and engaging environment. Using problems modeled on the Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools, you’ll build confidence, accuracy, and logical reasoning through hands-on practice and collaborative learning.
You’ll discover and apply key problem-solving strategies—like drawing diagrams, working backwards, and finding patterns—while learning when and how to use them most effectively. Along the way, you’ll strengthen your mathematical fluency in arithmetic, geometry, number theory, and logical reasoning. Through peer discussions and instructor feedback, you’ll prepare for the pacing and style of real competitions.
The content in Introductory Competitive Math overlaps with the CTY course Elementary School Competitive Mathematics. Students who have already taken Elementary School Competitive Mathematics may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before selecting this course.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and describe the characteristics of key problem-solving strategies, including when and how to apply them effectively
- Analyze and solve competition-style problems at the MOEMS level using appropriate strategies, demonstrating logical reasoning and mathematical fluency
- Explain the reasoning behind selected problem-solving approaches during peer discussions
- Apply problem-solving strategies to build familiarity with the pacing and pressure of real math competitions
- Reflect on personal problem-solving growth, using instructor feedback and peer collaboration to improve accuracy, efficiency, and confidence
