About the Course
This course will offer an exciting and supportive introduction to essential mathematical concepts and problem-solving strategies relevant to middle school math competitions, such as the AMC 8. Students in this course will build a solid understanding of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, counting, and probability through interactive activities, peer-based learning, and the development of logical reasoning skills.
The content in Intermediate Competitive Math overlaps with the CTY courses Middle School Competitive Mathematics I and Middle School Competitive Mathematics II. Students who have already taken these courses may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before selecting this course.
Learning Objectives
- Solve advanced-level problems in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, counting, and probability, deepening their understanding of concepts commonly featured in middle school math competitions like the AMC 8
- Apply core mathematical concepts in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, counting, and probability to solve problems commonly found in middle school math competitions, such as the AMC 8
- Use logical reasoning and pattern recognition to approach non-routine problems with creativity and persistence
- Collaborate effectively with peers to explore multiple problem-solving strategies and clearly communicate their mathematical thinking
- Demonstrate familiarity with the structure and expectations of middle school math contests, including time management and strategic decision-making
