About the Course

Discover the role that chemistry plays in your everyday life in this experiment-intensive course. Through hands-on chemistry activities, you’ll learn about the states of matter, explore different types of mixtures (and make your own!), and learn about subatomic particles and building atom models. As you continue your focus on chemistry in the kitchen, you’ll witness endothermic reactions in a bread-baking activity and learn about enzymes, fermentation, and food preservation with related at-home labs. Additionally, you’ll review the properties of water; chemical reactions and biological molecules; acids and bases; polymers; colors and pigments; biochemistry; and other relevant concepts.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe matter and its phase changes
  • Identify the properties of different mixtures and solutions
  • Explain the structure of atoms, including the charge and locations of subatomic particles
  • Analyze the periodic table to determine characteristics of atoms and properties of elements
  • Describe the physical and chemical properties of matter
  • Distinguish between physical and chemical changes
  • Identify the components of a chemical reaction and correctly balance chemical equations
  • Evaluate factors that affect the rates of a chemical reaction
  • Explain how enzymes speed up chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy
  • Define fermentation
  • Discuss food preservation methods
  • Describe the properties of macromolecules and their importance to the human body
  • Explain the unique properties of water
  • Describe the properties of vitamins and minerals and explain their roles in the body
  • Use indicators to determine the pH of different substances
  • Describe how soaps works
  • Explain the structure of polymers and their role in toys, athletic equipment, and other materials
  • Describe the electromagnetic spectrum

About Advanced Enrichment courses

These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. Students work individually and may finish the course early if they complete all requirements before the course end date.

Requirements

CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
