About the Course
Geometric and spatial reasoning skills are essential for living in and making sense of the world. Everything from solving a jigsaw puzzle to arranging furniture to efficiently packing a suitcase requires these abilities. In this course, we'll learn and practice these skills as we delve into the mathematical relationships between objects, ones that include congruence and symmetry, reflection and rotation, or expansion and contraction. We'll explore the geometric properties of regular polygons and the so-called platonic solids, rigorously investigating relationships between area, circumference, and volume. We'll extend our knowledge and understanding of shapes and patterns as they relate to two- and three-dimensional space. Exercise hands-on investigation, collaboration, and discussion as you and your classmates explore the properties of geometric structures and understand that physical, geometric, and analytic patterns are all connected.
Learning Objectives
- Identify various polygons and polyhedra, and calculate their perimeters, areas, and volumes
- Create various manipulatives and solve two- and three-dimensional puzzles Understand why some regular polygons tessellate and others do not
About Advanced Enrichment courses
These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. Students work individually and may finish the course early if they complete all requirements before the course end date.
Requirements
CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
