About the Course

Has anyone ever told you that you have your mother’s eyes? Or your father’s nose? Or even your great aunt’s hair? Whether they know it or not, they are talking about your genes. Your genetic makeup, the thousands of building blocks that make you—well, you—has been passed down for generations. We’ll begin this course with an exploration of Mendelian genetics to determine how traits are passed from parents to offspring. Then we’ll move on to human genetics, practicing both classic and complex crosses as we learn which traits dominate, which are rarer, and why. We will also look at genetics on a larger scale, determining how the genetic composition of a population can affect its survival over time.

The content in Genetics Uncovered: The Science of You overlaps with the CTY course Mean Genes. Students who have already taken Mean Genes may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before selecting this course.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and compare dominant and recessive traits
  • Explain the cell division process, including the roles of DNA and chromosomes
  • Explain how the cell division process relates to the random nature of passing along genetic traits from one generation to another
  • Distinguish between, calculate, and analyze theoretical and experimental probabilities as related to genetics
