About the Course
Your CTY friend teaches you a dice game. If you roll a 4, you win and the game ends. If your friend rolls a 5, they win and the game ends. You take turns rolling until one person wins. If you roll first, what is the probability you will win? This course explores probability and statistics, two areas of mathematics that easily transfer from the classroom to the real world. We'll conduct experiments and learn to make graphs, charts, and tables to display data. We'll learn to determine the effects of variables; for example, you may examine how various design characteristics like weight and length affect the distance a paper airplane will travel. We'll learn how to do calculations such as the number of possible probabilities and outcomes for various events. We'll also learn how to spot incorrectly gathered or misrepresented data in sources like newspapers and journals. This is an Online course adapted from the On-Campus course Data and Chance Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per week (90 minutes of synchronous class time, 1-2 hours of independent work). Course will include 6 sessions over 6 weeks. Course Overview Learning Objectives: Predict likelihood based on statistical data Represent, apply, and interpret mathematical ideas through modeling real data and analyzing them to draw conclusions Compile and construct data sets to calculate averages Formulate outcomes of simple random processes
About Advanced Enrichment courses
These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges.
Requirements
CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
