About the Course
One look at classic anatomical sketches such as Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, created from the artist's meticulous observations of dissected cadavers, can inspire a deep interest in the body and how it works. Doctors and scientists continue to discover new information about how bodies function. This course surveys the human body's immune, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, excretory, and reproductive systems, paying special attention to cells and tissues. Keeping with the theme that structure dictates function, you'll examine the systems individually and then explore their interconnectedness through readings, lectures, discussions, and labs, which culminate in the dissection of a fetal pig. As you develop an understanding of the intricacies of the human body, you'll learn techniques employed in the health sciences.

Typical Class Size: 18-20
Learning Objectives
- Model the interrelatedness of three systems working to maintain homeostasis in the human body
- Provide an example from each level of organization of the human body (cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems) to show that structure dictates the function of different systems in the human body
- Select, review, and report on a disease or dysfunction that can impact one human body system, including the causes, how it would manifest in qualitative or quantitative data, and how it contrasts to a properly functioning system
- Maintain a laboratory notebook of scientific observations including measurements and data, correctly labeled anatomical sketches of dissections to organs and a fetal pig, and comparisons/contrasts of human body systems
- Demonstrate awareness of skills and tools necessary to complete a scientific dissection by observing and critiquing the dissection skills of co-researchers, based on a peer-developed set of criteria
About Advanced Enrichment courses
These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges.
Requirements
CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
