About the Course
This course will provide a dynamic and engaging overview of key mathematical topics and problem-solving techniques commonly found in high school math competitions such as the AMC 10 and AMC 12. Students in this course will focus on building a strong foundation in algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics through accessible explanations, collaborative problem-solving, and strategic test-taking skills. Along the way, you’ll gain confidence as a mathematical problem solver and build your growth mindset.
The content in Advanced Competitive Math overlaps with the CTY courses High School Competitive Math Prep and High School Competitive Math I. Students who have already taken these courses may wish to consult with an enrollment advisor before selecting this course.
Learning Objectives
- Develop and apply foundational problem-solving strategies in algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics—core areas featured in high school math competitions such as the AMC 10 and AMC 12
- Solve non-routine mathematical problems using creative approaches such as logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and strategic thinking, demonstrating increased confidence and accuracy
- Engage in collaborative problem-solving and discussion, analyzing multiple approaches to a problem and learning to communicate mathematical ideas effectively
- Understand the structure and expectations of competitive math contests, including time-management techniques, strategic guessing, and test-taking strategies
- Foster a positive mathematical identity and growth mindset, encouraging continued exploration of enrichment opportunities such as the Skillshop Challenge: Advanced Competitive Math
About Advanced Enrichment courses
These courses offer above-grade-level material that is presented in a novel context, explored with other advanced learners, and guided by a CTY educator to help prepare students for higher-order thinking and college-style academic challenges. Students work individually and may finish the course early if they complete all requirements before the course end date.
Requirements
CTY courses have grade-level requirements and most require minimum test scores. Some courses may also have prerequisites.
