Eligibility for CTY Summer Programs


The eligibility system announced on July 1 is effective for CTY Summer Programs beginning in summer 2019.


Summer Programs for Students in Grades 7-12

> Intensive Studies - Grades 7 and Above

All courses in the Intensive Studies program require Advanced CTY-level scores on designated standardized tests. In addition, students must:

  • Have completed at least grade 7 by the time the program begins.
  • Be at least 12 years old by June 30 of the program year.
  • Not turn 17 years old before September 1 of the program year.
  • Meet any additional course prerequisites.

> Academic Explorations - Grades 7 and Above

All courses in the Academic Explorations program require CTY-level scores on designated standardized tests. In addition, students must:

  • Have completed at least grade 7 by the time the program begins.
  • Be at least 12 years old by June 30 of the program year.
  • Not turn 17 years old before September 1 of the program year.
  • Meet any additional course prerequisites.

> Civic Leadership

The Civic Leadership Institute is a leadership and service program. It does not require above grade-level test results. To attend, students must have completed at least grade 9 by the time the program begins. If they are not previous Talent Search participants, their academic performance should be at the top of their grade level, similar to that of Talent Search participants (e.g, scores in the top five percent on a national or state grade level test).Review course descriptions in the Academic Explorations catalog.

> Global Issues in the 21st Century - Grades 10-12

All courses in the Global Issues in the 21st Century program require CTY-level scores on designated standardized tests. In addition, students must:

  • Have completed at least grade 10 by the time the program begins.
  • Meet any additional course prerequisites.

> Institute for Advanced Critical and Cultural Studies - Grades 10-12

All courses in the Institute for Advanced Critical and Cultural Studies require CTY-level scores on designated standardized tests. In addition, students must:

  • Have completed grade 10 or above by the time the program begins.
  • Meet any additional course prerequisites.

Summer Programs for Students in Grades 2-6

> For day programs, in addition to having scores at the required level, students must:

  • Be at least 7 years old by June 30 of the program year.
  • Have completed the minimum grade required for the course by the time the program begins. Course are typically offered for Grades 2-3, Grades 3-4, Grades 4-5 and Grades 5-6.
  • Meet any additional course prerequisites. Check back in December 2018 for course-by-course requirements.

> For residential programs, in addition to having scores at the required level, students must:

  • Be at least 10 years old by June 30 of the program year
  • Have completed at least grade 5 by the time the program begins.
