Students Commuting to Residential Sites

Guidelines for Commuter Students at Residential Sites

Commuter students at the residential sites attend classes with the residential students and are encouraged to join in all supervised campus activities. We have found that commuter students who participate in all aspects of the program, social and recreational, as well as academic, have the best experience with us. Please note that exact policies and schedules vary by site; you will receive your site’s specific information at registration. In order for commuter participation to continue to be an option at residential sites, it is imperative that families abide by the guidelines provided:

  1. Commuter students are required to attend all academic activities, including the study sessions. Many instructors run workshops and other group activities during the study sessions, and students cannot afford to miss them.
  2. Students are required to arrive on campus in time to walk with their classmates to their classrooms (but no earlier than 8:30 a.m.) and must always sign in and out of the site office. They will be assigned to a Resident Assistant with whom they will need to check in at designated times in the day and whose daily student meetings they are asked to attend.
  3. The length of a commuter student’s day varies according to program. Commuter students in the 7th grade and above program must remain on campus until approximately 9:15 p.m. each evening in order to meet the academic requirements of the program. Commuter students in the 5th and 6th grade must remain on campus until approximately 5:30 p.m, but are encouraged to stay for the social and recreational activities that take place after dinner. Sample schedules for both programs are on the reverse. Check for the exact schedule for your site when you register.
  4. Commuter students must attend the opening day registration and orientation activities held on the Sunday before classes begin. (See site packet for dates and other details). Students need to participate in pretesting in some courses, hear the rules of the program, take a campus tour, participate in ice-breakers and other activities, and begin to get to know their classmates.
  5. Commuter students will eat lunch and dinner with the residential students. They will be given meal tickets or meal cards for this purpose. (Dinner is optional for students in the 5th and 6th grade programs.)
  6. Commuter students are encouraged to attend as many program events as possible, including weekend events. Commuter students should sign in and out at the site office prior to and following attendance at weekend events.
  7. Commuter students may not bring friends not attending the program to any program function.
  8. Commuter students may not take residential students off campus at any time or take residential students home for the weekend unless the residential student’s parents have given written permission and filled out the appropriate form and returned it to the site office.
  9. We strongly discourage parents of commuters from visiting their children at the site during the day. If parents must see their children during the day, they need to check in at the site’s main office first.
  10. Exact policies for commuters (sign-in procedures, for example), as well as schedules, will vary by site. It is imperative that parents of commuters meet with the Site Director on Opening Day to discuss the specific expectations for commuter students at that site.
