We’re thrilled to be partnering with Virginia State University for the first time to bring the school’s strengths in environmental scholarship into the CTY classroom. Students will take traditional CTY courses adapted to incorporate critical environmental issues like global food systems, agricultural sustainability, and environmental racism. They’ll attend lectures led by VSU professors and graduate students, read and discuss works by writers of color, study historic environmental court cases, explore bioethics in agriculture, and get hands-on experience applying their knowledge to real-world situations—all while living and learning on the campus of this public, historically Black land-grant university. This exciting CTY-HBCU partnership introduces middle- and high-school students to college-level coursework and renowned scholars in these vital fields of study.
Founded in 1882, VSU features a 231-acre main campus plus Randolph Farm, a renowned 412-acre agricultural research facility. The campus sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River with expansive views of Petersburg. It is located just minutes off Interstates 85 and 95 and boasts 11 residence halls, 18 academic buildings, and a state-of-the-art multipurpose center.
