Chinese for Elementary Students, Intermediate, Part I

Hone your Chinese speaking and listening skills and increase your reading and writing abilities and grammar skills in this first course in our Intermediate Chinese-language series for elementary school students. In this course, you’ll become more familiar with Chinese characters and vocabulary and be able to recognize main characters without pinyin. Lesson topics are based on daily life and include including birthdays, daily routines, clothes, how to locate or point out items, and Chinese culture.

During virtual class meetings your instructor will guide you through lessons, discussions, games, and other resources designed to enhance your learning. You will also participate in one-on-one virtual meetings with your instructor and teaching assistant.

Meeting times: Monday, Wednesday – 7-8 p.m. ET

Time Commitment: 4 - 5 hours and 45 minutes per week (2 hours of class time, 45-minute optional meeting, 2-3 hours of independent work).

What we'll do

We’ll work through lessons and assignments in weekly units that align with The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standard. Each unit contains lessons, practice interactive activities, and homework that include reading, writing, listening, and speaking exercises, and discussion forums. Each week, students will attend two live sessions, participate in group discussions, and collaborate on small tasks while practicing the spoken language. Virtual one-on-one meetings with your instructor and teaching assistant will help reinforce the learning experience.

How to identify and discuss the key facts about the traditional Chinese festivals
How to read Chinese calendar and state dates in correct order
How to inquire whose birthday it is and ask the year someone was born
How to gain cultural insight about the traditional Chinese leisure activities
How to how to talk about time and inquire about someone’s daily schedule
How to use “了- particle” at the end of sentences
How to gain cultural knowledge about traditional Chinese housing
How to state relative locations and ask what someone is doing somewhere
How to indicate locations of people and things
How to describe different types of clothing and how they fit
How to explain discount in Chinese and inquire about someone’s purchase
How to write a paragraph of 8-10 sentences to describe your daily routine
How to create a profile to describe someone

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Read and write the learned Chinese characters and phrases correctly
Communicate on various topics such as date, time, daily schedule, locations, and clothing in Chinese
Identify the key facts about Chinese traditional holidays, leisure activities, birthdays, housing, and clothing
Compose sentences and short paragraphs related to lesson topics in Chinese using correct vocabulary, grammar points, and sentence structures
Summarize the main ideas and supporting details in short texts on the learned topics
Develop an awareness and understanding of the humanistic aspects of the Chinese language and culture
Acquire information about the Chinese culture and compare it to their own culture

How we'll measure learning

Instructors evaluate student work using rubrics and provide detailed constructive feedback on each assignment. This course is aligned to the ACTFL.

This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but some assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.
