About the Course

Chinese for Elementary Students, Intermediate, Part I

Hone your Chinese speaking and listening skills and increase your reading and writing abilities and grammar skills in this first course in our Intermediate Chinese-language series for elementary school students. In this course, you’ll become more familiar with Chinese characters and vocabulary and be able to recognize main characters without pinyin. Lesson topics are based on daily life and include including birthdays, daily routines, clothes, how to locate or point out items, and Chinese culture.

During virtual class meetings your instructor will guide you through lessons, discussions, games, and other resources designed to enhance your learning. You will also participate in one-on-one virtual meetings with your instructor and teaching assistant.

Meeting times: Monday, Wednesday – 7-8 p.m. ET

Time Commitment: 4 - 5 hours and 45 minutes per week (2 hours of class time, 45-minute optional meeting, 2-3 hours of independent work).

Technical Requirements

This course requires a computer with high-speed Internet access and an up-to-date web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. You must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.

This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but some assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.

Courses may include videos from the web. Recommendations or links at the end of videos are provided by the video host and are not CTY recommendations.
