Chinese for Elementary Students, Advanced, Part IV

The final course in our advanced Chinese-language series for elementary school students focuses on Chinese grammar and sentence structure. In addition to growing your vocabulary, we’ll review previously learned vocabulary, expressions, and phrases, and respond to essay questions in Chinese. Topics include giving and receiving gifts, staying in hotels, traditional Chinese family structures, meals, and etiquette. By the end of this course, you will be able to engage in casual discussions and complete handwritten and typed assignments in Chinese. During virtual class meetings your instructor will guide you through lessons, discussions, and other resources designed to enhance your learning. You will also participate in one-on-one virtual meetings with your instructor and teaching assistant.

Meeting times: Tuesday, Thursday – 7-8 p.m. ET

Time Commitment: 4 - 5 hours, 45 minutes per week (2 hours of class time, 45 minute optional meeting, 2-3 hours of independent work).

What we'll do

We’ll work through lessons and assignments in weekly units that align with The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standard. Each unit contains lessons, practice interactive activities, and homework that include reading, writing, listening, and speaking exercises, and discussion forums. Each week, you will attend two live sessions, participate in group discussions, and collaborate on small tasks while practicing the spoken language. Virtual one-on-one meetings with your instructor and teaching assistant will help reinforce the learning experience.

What we’ll learn

How to describe the characteristics of a traditional Chinese home
How to use grammar function to indicate the second action takes place right after the first action
How to signify possession or to show who is performing an action
How to explain and give examples of using Chinese idioms such as “Courtesy goes back and forth” and “The very courteous are never blamed”
How to explain the culture of giving and receiving Chinese gifts
How to describe the hotel check-in and check-out procedure and make requests for services
How to understand the importance of homophones in the Chinese language and their significance in Chinese culture
How to gain knowledge of the structure and relationships in traditional Chinese families
How to explain and give examples of using the Chinese phrase “The crack goes to the bottom of the clay pot“
How to describe the titles of family members on the paternal and maternal sides
How to describe Chinese courtesy phrases and customary expressions of humility
How to talk about and gain the knowledge of Chinese food culture, regional food, and dining etiquette
How to explain and give an example using the phrase “First time strange, second time familiar“
How to describe some important facts about Chinese families and lineage, and explain common ways of expressing gratitude
How to write theme-based dialogues and paragraphs

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Communicate about various topics such as Chinese etiquette for gifts, Chinese Si He compound houses, hotel services, familial titles and relationship, Chinese etiquettes, and Chinese food culture
Describe and memorize the learned Chinese idioms and use them in writing
Explain the historical and cultural aspects related to the lesson contents and compare them to your own culture
Apply learned vocabulary, sentence structures, and grammar points in speaking and writing
Carry on discussions related to lesson topics
Compose short paragraphs with correct vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures

How we'll measure learning

Instructors evaluate student work using rubrics and provide detailed constructive feedback on each assignment. This course is aligned to The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standard on full language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but some assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.
