Chinese Essay Writing

Get creative with how you express your ideas in Chinese using this course that focuses on the written language. You’ll begin reviewing vocabulary and grammar—including sentence structure—before moving on to the writing process. Activities will include reading articles that require you to synthesize, determine cause and effect, and draw comparisons and conclusions. You’ll be encouraged to support your ideas with specific examples, and writing assignments may include a short story, a description, and a persuasive essay.
This course is ideal if you have strong speaking skills but want more practice reading and writing in Chinese.
The course will be separated by grade into two groups (grades 2-6 and 7-12) for optimized learning.
Meeting times: Monday, Wednesday – 7-8 p.m. ET
Time Commitment: 4 - 5.75 hours per week (2 hours class time, 0.75 hours optional meeting, 2-3 hours independent work).

For LIVE summer courses offered in June, please note the first virtual class meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20. All other LIVE class meetings will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
For Session-Based classes with synchronous meetings, your instructor will communicate with you to schedule the first class meeting.

Students must achieve qualifying scores on an advanced assessment to be eligible for CTY programs. If you don’t have qualifying scores, you have several different testing options. We’ll help you find the right option for your situation.

Chinese for Elementary Students, Advanced, Part IV or 4 years of Chinese study for students in grades 2-6; Chinese Language, Intermediate, Part II or 2 years of Chinese study for students in grades 7-12; or a placement test

Technical Requirements
This course requires a computer with high-speed Internet access and an up-to-date web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. You must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.
This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.
Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but some assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.
