Take on a college-level challenge and learn topics typically found in a university course while preparing for the AP® Spanish Language and Culture exam. In this course, conducted entirely in Spanish, you’ll improve proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You’ll develop critical thinking and writing skills while composing weekly essays and completing readings and lessons in Spanish. In addition, you’ll use the Spanish language to communicate effectively in school and real-life situations, and carry on conversations with classmates. During virtual class meetings, your instructor will guide you through lectures, readings, discussions, and other resources. You will also participate in one-on-one virtual meetings with your instructor and teaching assistant. This is a fast-paced course that condenses an entire year of AP Spanish into 12 weeks.

Meeting times: Monday, Wednesday – 8-9 p.m. ET

Time Commitment: 8 - 9 hours, 45 minutes per week (2 hours of class time, 45-minute optional meeting, 6-7 hours of independent work).

What we'll do

We’ll build your interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills in Spanish, as well as your critical reading and analytical writing skills, as you are exposed to diverse genres of works in Spanish. We will work with a variety of authentic materials and perform authentic tasks in the language, preparing you for the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam.

What we’ll learn

How to analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text
The structure of text, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and more relate to each other and the whole
How to apply appropriate and varied syntactical expressions and communication strategies while speaking; understand how language functions in different contexts; make effective choices for meaning or style; and comprehend more fully while reading and listening
How to assess point of view and purpose, and understand how it shapes the content and style of a text
How to determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; and summarize key supporting details and ideas
How to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research
How to evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric
How to integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally
How to plan and research an issue or topic for presentational writing
How to prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners
How to present information, findings, and supporting evidence
How to write an informative/explanatory text to convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Determine the meaning of an authentic text and respond to multiple-choice questions to demonstrate reading comprehension with 90% accuracy
Synthesize connections between authentic texts and audio to demonstrate listening comprehension in writing through multiple-choice and open-ended questions with 90% accuracy
Compose written exchanges that include appropriate register for your target audience, and request for clarification and paraphrasing, with 90% accuracy
Compare and contrast products, practices, and perspectives of selected culture communities to those in your own community during a two-minute oral presentation
Produce formal, written compositions by interpreting the literal meaning of a text and explaining ideas and opinions based on three authentic sources (article, graph/chart/infograph, and audio source) in a five-paragraph essay
Plan and perform a two- to four-minute conversation based on a specific topic, including relevant information and appropriate register

How we'll measure learning

Instructors evaluate student work using rubrics and provide detailed constructive feedback on each assignment. This course is aligned to the College Board AP Spanish Language and Culture course skills and contents.

Students must achieve qualifying scores on an advanced assessment to be eligible for CTY programs. If you don’t have qualifying scores, you have several different testing options. We’ll help you find the right option for your situation.

At least three years of Spanish language instruction, and a satisfactory result on the CTY language placement test

This course requires a computer with high-speed Internet access and an up-to-date web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. You must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.

This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but some assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.

This course uses Respondus LockDown Browser proctoring software for designated assessments. LockDown Browser is a client application that is installed to a local computer. Visit the Respondus website for system requirements.

Through interactive live sessions with peers, real-world discussion topics, and scaffolded activities, students enhance their writing skills one step at a time.
