This course covers a full-year honors curriculum, aligned with the Common Core State Standards, to prepare students for success in grade 4 mathematics. We’ll start by reviewing grade 2 concepts and applying them to more in-depth problems and larger calculations. As we move on to tackle more complex problems, we will explore computation, expand our vocabulary, and learn to use various applications with an emphasis on reading and problem solving. Each unit includes videos, interactive webpages, graded assessments, and projects to develop your reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

The recommended length of enrollment for this course is 6 months.

Group Session Meeting Times (optional): Mondays – 7 p.m. ET

Time Commitment: 3-6 hours per week (1 hour optional meeting, 3-5 hours independent work).

Course Overview

What we'll do

We’ll work through weekly lessons and assignments covering all CCSS for Grade 3 Mathematics utilizing the theme of mathematics in the home. The first unit is a review of key concepts from CCSS Grade 2 Mathematics that you will need to know to be successful. Lessons include video content, notes, practice problems, and interactive webpages. You will use a skill check assignment to assess your learning of the material from the lesson. Units also include quizzes, written assignments, projects, tests, and cumulative exams. You will interact with your peers in ungraded forum discussions. There are optional activities provided to further reinforce the skills that are introduced in each section. You can attend weekly group meetings with other students enrolled in the course. These meetings are led by CTY staff and discuss varying topics each week. You can also schedule an individual meeting to review specific coursework with your instructor.

Introduction to fractions

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Perform basic arithmetic operations with whole numbers up to the hundred-thousands place using a variety of strategies presented in the course
Relate fractions to a whole and articulate the relationship between unit fractions
Perform measurements of length, liquids, and time to the nearest whole number
Define and accurately describe two-dimensional shapes according to lines and angles
Examine the structure of area and how it relates to multiplication
Create, read, and interpret data displays including picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots

While the course provides students with independence and flexibility, students must manage their time to complete the course before the end date.

This course requires a computer with high-speed Internet access and an up-to-date web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. You must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.

This course uses a virtual classroom for instructor-student communication. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client, and on tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Recorded meetings can only be viewed on a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both free to download.

This course uses Respondus LockDown Browser proctoring software for designated assessments. LockDown Browser is a client application that is installed to a local computer. Visit the Respondus website for system requirements.
