Chinese for Elementary School Students, Basic, Part II

Eligibility: CTY-level or Advanced CTY-level math or verbal score required

Course Description


Part II of the Chinese course for young students continues the emphasis on everyday spoken Chinese, Chinese character writing, and the introduction to Chinese language and culture. Students will continue to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Lesson topics include talking about pets, Chinese-speaking ability, swimming, friends, and Chinese food. By the end of the two-part course, students will have been introduced to most of the important grammatical structures of spoken Chinese and a vocabulary of about 700 lexical items. With the language skills acquired during this course, students should be able to survive most of the simple daily conversational situations.

Students interact with the instructors and other students using Internet-based software. Course materials include a textbook and a workbook purchased separately by the student.

Biweekly interactive virtual online sessions are held in the evenings (both EST and PST). A school's need to hold daytime sessions for its students will be honored whenever possible.

Separate conversation sessions between each student and the instructor or teaching assistant are arranged individually.

我真饿 I am Really Hungry

  • Expressing hunger or thirst.
  • Asking what someone would like to eat or drink.
  • Talking about someone’s abilities.

复习 Revision

  • Reviewing all Chinese students have learnt in the textbook.
  • Stating the number of animals.

Technical Requirements

This course requires a properly maintained computer with high-speed internet access and an up-to-date web browser (such as Chrome or Firefox). The student must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.

Zoom online virtual classroom
This course uses an online virtual classroom for discussions with the instructor. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client and also tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Students who are unable to attend live sessions will need a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed to watch recorded meetings. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both available for free download.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but in some cases assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.
