Arabic for Elementary School Students, Intermediate, Part II

Open to: Grades 2 - 6

Eligibility: CTY-level or Advanced CTY-level math or verbal score required

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Arabic for Elementary School Students, Intermediate, Part I or placement test

Course Description


This intermediate Arabic course is designed for 2nd to 6th grade students who have had prior knowledge and experience with the language and culture at the elementary level. The course will provide students with an opportunity to achieve their goals of speaking, listening, reading, and writing at an intermediate level, reinforcing critical fundamental areas of language learning and expanding content in grammar, oral exercises, and culture. During the course, students will enjoy wonderful culture tours every week. These tours will help students gain knowledge of Arabic countries and their history, traditions, and food. Students may also participate in fun game nights to supplement the lessons. Students will be encouraged to take full advantage of all materials provided to them in hopes of aiding their learning and retention of the Arabic language with greater confidence and enjoyment.

Once students have successfully completed Part II of the Arabic for Elementary School Students, Intermediate, course, they should be able to:

  • Read and write longer paragraphs.
  • Describe daily activities applying correct grammar.
  • Ask and answer questions.
  • Use daily expressions in appropriate cultural contexts
  • Learn and apply various aspects of grammar
  • Communicate in Arabic using practical and high-frequency vocabulary.

Interactive virtual online sessions are held twice per week for one hour in the evenings (both ET and PT). Separate conversations between each student and the instructor or teaching assistant are arranged individually. Students interact with the instructor and other students using Internet-based software.

This course has synchronous virtual class meetings and students will also schedule one-on-one virtual meetings directly with the instructor and teaching assistant. View the schedule for class meeting times. Meetings will be recorded for students who are unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.

Virtual classrooms, and student activities in the classroom, may be recorded and added to the course as an ongoing asset for all class students to review. Students may be invited to interact in CTY community spaces that include students and instructors and potentially specially invited guests that are not enrolled in their course. Videos from YouTube or other web providers may be present in the course. Video recommendations or links provided at end of videos are generated by the video host provider and are not CTY recommendations. Student contributions (e.g., projects, forum posts, etc.) may remain in the course after the student completes the course. These artifacts may be preserved to showcase student work or to continue important conversations.

Students will need a headset with microphone. In addition, the following books are required for this course:

Recommended: Although an Arabic-English dictionary is not required, it may be useful as a personal reference for the duration of this course.

Course Details

Week 1

  • Recall and recognize concepts from Arabic for Elementary School Students, Intermediate, Part I
  • Conduct a conversation about the items that I want and that I buy from a grocery store
  • Recall how to conjugate past tense verbs 

Week 2

  • Ask and answer questions about making a certain type of food
  • Name Arab desserts
  • Identify the active participle in a sentence
  • Differentiate between the word order and subject-verb agreement in a nominal and verbal sentence

Week 3

  • Describe how I feel
  • Express the status of my health
  • Name the main body parts
  • Negate the past tense verb
  • Identify the object of the sentence

Week 4

  • Name different types of doctors
  • Ask others how they feel
  • Conjugate doubled verbs in the past tense

Week 5

  • Discuss entertainment and leisurely activities
  • Express events in the past tense using “was”
  • Conjugate the verb “was”
  • Express past possession using “I had” and “There was”

Week 6

  • Recall and recognize concepts from weeks 1-5 to prepare for the midterm exam

Week 7

  • Express fun activities that I did
  • Conduct a conversation about what I want to do
  • Identify the prefixes needed to conjugate present tense verbs
  • Conjugate present tense verbs for all pronouns 

Week 8

  • Summarize and discuss lessons learned from different types of animals
  • Negate the present tense verb
  • Change verbs to the future tense form

Week 9

  • Summarize and discuss interactions between animals
  • Ask and answer questions in the future tense form
  • Address someone using  “يا”

Week 10

  • Describe a trip or a vacation
  • Describe the weather
  • Conjugate doubled verbs in the present tense
  • Differentiate between nominal and verbal sentences

Week 11

  • Name all of the Arab countries
  • Classify which Arab countries are located in Africa and Asia
  • Express future events using “will be”
  • Construct sentences using correct prepositions 

Week 12

  • Recall and recognize concepts from weeks 1-11 to prepare for the final exam

Technical Requirements

This course requires a properly maintained computer with high-speed internet access and an up-to-date web browser (such as Chrome or Firefox). The student must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.

Zoom online virtual classroom
This course uses an online virtual classroom which can be used for instructor-student communication if the student has any questions about the course or curriculum. The classroom works on standard computers with the Zoom desktop client and also tablets or handhelds that support the Zoom Mobile app. Students will need a computer with the Zoom desktop client installed to watch any recorded meetings. The Zoom desktop client and Zoom Mobile App are both available for free download.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but in some cases assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.

The conversation was over in about 4 sentences but it left the waiter wide eyed. Apparently he used some non-standard conversational words and my daughter followed along and answered appropriately. When he asked me where she was learning Arabic, I told him all about JHU.

I am now talking with my daughter about helping her start an Arabic Club that would meet once month at this restaurant. She is also starting to tutor her 20 year old "cool" cousin on Arabic who has been teaching herself Arabic from a book, but did not know proper pronunciation of the alphabet or words.
