On-Campus Programs Course Cancellation FAQ

Updated July 1, 2022

Which CTY programs/courses were canceled?
Please refer to our list of canceled 2022 on-campus courses (PDF).

How did this happen?
Staffing shortfalls contributed to conditions that made it impossible to deliver an experience that rises to the level of quality our families and CTY expect. Recognizing that without the necessary number of staff we would be unable to operate an enriching, safe and educational experience for some of our students, we made the difficult decision to cancel select courses.

The way these decisions were made and communicated by CTY do not meet Johns Hopkins University’s standards. That is why the University has brought in Professor Stephen Gange, Johns Hopkins University’s Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, to serve as interim Executive Director, and to begin an exploration of what went wrong and ensure that the focus remains on providing a top-quality educational experience for our students. The university is committed to supporting the mission and people of CTY which, for more than 40 years, has provided world-class opportunities for academically advanced pre-college learners.

We deeply regret the extreme inconvenience and disappointment CTY’s decisions and the late timing of notifications has caused families and students.

If my child’s session 2 class was not canceled yet, how do I know that it won’t be canceled tomorrow or next week?
We have cancelled courses where we were not 100% certain of staffing arrangements. Currently, instructors and support staff are fully in place for all other classes. While we don’t anticipate any additional cancellations, you will be immediately notified of any changes to the class schedule.

What are you offering families to help deal with the incredible disruption of these cancellations?
We are refunding the full cost of tuition and fees. Families can expect the funds to be returned to the original method of payment in five to seven business days.

In addition, the following options are available to affected families for alternative CTY programming:

  1. Submit an online course application and receive a 25% discount using the SUMMER25 code, expiring June 30, 2023. We offer both asynchronous and hybrid synchronous/asynchronous classes.
  2. Receive a 25% discount for a course next summer with code SUM23OCP, expiring June 30, 2023.

We will also reimburse any travel costs incurred with traveling to or from cancelled courses.

If I bring my child to the site as planned will he/she be placed in a new class?
In order to protect the health and safety of our students, we ask that you do not arrive onsite if your child’s course has been canceled.

We have a number of options available to help navigate what we understand is an extremely disruptive situation.
