Registration is now closed for the CTY International Educators Institute, a professional development opportunity for international educators interested in learning more about developing the talents of high-ability students. Please contact CTYInternational@jhu.edu to be added to the notification list for future Institutes.
The CTY Educators Institute introduces educators to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY), offering insights into our teaching philosophy as well as firsthand experience in our Summer Programs classrooms.
The two-week workshop consists of two parts.
The first three days of training are held on the Johns Hopkins University campus in Baltimore, Maryland or the University of Hong Kong campus in Hong Kong. During this time, participants learn about teaching and learning as it takes place in CTY Summer Programs. The training focuses on getting participants ready to take full advantage of the second part of the institute: putting theory into practice in their assigned courses.
During the institute’s first part, participants learn:
Participants join the CTY Summer Programs staff at their assigned site for two days of orientation and instructional preparations, followed by a week in the classroom. The first week of CTY Summer Programs is intense as staff and students establish a living-learning community. During their week in the classroom, participants are encouraged to engage in all instructional activities and, if possible, teach a lesson. There are check-in meetings throughout the week and a debrief meeting on the last day where participants reflect on their experiences and share their feedback.
Educators leave the program with a deeper understanding of CTY and a clearer sense of how CTY’s student-centered teaching approach both meets the needs of high ability students and translates into a more typical school setting. Those who successfully complete the training receive a certificate of participation. Approximately two months after the institute, organizers will contact participants to ask them to reflect on how they have applied what they learned at CTY in their classrooms.
Program costs are $4,515 USD per participant for the training on the Johns Hopkins campus (housing included) and $4,518–$5,188 USD per participant (depending on the housing option) for the training in Hong Kong. Meals and materials are included. Program costs do not include travel to the Institute, medical, visa, or any incidental expenses. Participants are responsible for booking their own travel to and from the Institute.
