Spanish for Elementary School Students, Intermediate, Part I

Open to: Grades 2 - 6

Prerequisites: Qualifying verbal or math score, and successful completion of Spanish for Elementary School Students, Basic, Part IV or placement test

Course Description

Description

This course is designed for 2nd to 6th grade students who have had prior knowledge and experience with Spanish language and culture at the elementary level. The course provides students with an opportunity to achieve their goals of speaking, listening, reading, and writing Spanish at an intermediate level. The course will reinforce fundamental areas of language learning, and expand content in grammar, oral exercises, and culture. Students will be encouraged to take full advantage of all materials provided to them in hopes of aiding their learning and retention of the Spanish language with greater confidence and enjoyment.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to appropriately use and understand the following:

  • Definite and indefinite articles
  • Direct and indirect object pronouns
  • Estar + past participle
  • Noun - adjective agreement
  • Present tense verbs
  • Past tense verbs
  • Personal "A"
  • Progressive tenses – forms of the present participle in regular, irregular, and stem-changing verbs
  • Prepositional phrases
  • Reflexive verbs and pronouns
  • Various forms of commands
  • Verbs + infinitives
  • Verbs: ser, estar and tener
  • Verb + subject agreement in number and gender

After completing this course, students should also be able to appropriately understand and discuss the following topics:

  • Body parts
  • Chronological order of events
  • Dreams and aspirations
  • Hunger and thirst
  • Location
  • Personal feelings
  • Quantity
  • Real - time story sequencing
  • Time duration, and units of time
  • Storytelling in present and past tenses

Technical Requirements

This course requires a properly maintained computer with high-speed internet access and an up-to-date web browser (such as Chrome or Firefox). The student must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.

This course uses an online virtual classroom for discussions with the instructor. The classroom works on standard computers with the Adobe Connect Add-in or Adobe Flash plugin, and also tablets or handhelds that support the Adobe Connect Mobile appStudents who are unable to attend live sessions will need a computer with the Adobe Connect Add-in or Adobe Flash plugin installed to watch recorded meetings. The Adobe Connect Add-in, Adobe Flash plugin, and Adobe Connect Mobile app are available for free download. Students who do not have the Flash plug-in installed or enabled on their browsers will be prompted to download and install the Adobe Connect add-in when accessing the virtual classroom.

Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but in some cases assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.
