This course is for advanced elementary and middle school students. In addition to learning the new vocabulary and phrases, this course emphasizes on reviewing the previously learned vocabulary, expressions, and phrases to make descriptive sentences and to answer short questions accurately. This course has a strong focus on Chinese grammar and sentence structures in addition to listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Successful completion of this course prepares students for the Chinese for Elementary Students, Advanced, Part II (CHL8).

Although a Chinese-English dictionary is not required, it may be useful as a personal reference for the duration of this course.
Student will use new vocabulary to identify the location of things. Ex: 上面(above)， 下面 (below)， 前面 (in front)，后面 (behind)，里面 (inside)，外面 (outside)
Students will learn about different professions, family relationship and sports. Ex: 医生(physician)，商人 (businessman)，老师(teacher)，家厅主妇 (house-wife)，中学生 (Middle school student)，篮球 (basketball)，太极拳 (Tai Chi); using the new and previous words to describe jobs, functions of each job, family member and sports.
Students will talk about time of a day, daily activities, school activities. Ex: 现 在几点 (What time is it), 上午(morning)，中午(noon) ，下午(afternoon)， 三點半(3:30)， 七點 四十五分 (7:45)， 上學(go to school)，放學 (after school)，做功課 (do homework)， 吃晚飯 (have dinner)，睡覺 (go to bed).
Students will identify each room in a house, room’s color, size, furniture, use of furniture, activities at home, and review the position of things. Ex: 我的房间很大，是蓝色的 (my room is big and it’s blue), 床 （bed）， 沙發 （sofa）， 衣柜 （dresser），书架（bookshelf），杂志（magazine），桌子上有电脑 （computer on the table)， 在房间里看书 (reading in my room)
Students will learn and share their daily activities, Ex: 你在做什么？（What are you doing ?), 我在玩电脑游戏(I am playing computer games) ，小鸟在飞来飞去 (birds are flying)
Students will learn to make a phone call in Chinese, discuss telephone conversation manners, invite a friend over, and how to take a message. Ex： 请问，。。。在家吗？（Excuse me， is 。。。。there ？) 那么下星期六怎么样？ (How about next Saturday then ? )，请他给我回电话好吗？（Would you ask him to call me back ?)
Students will use vocabulary and grammar to describe their courses, activities and events in school，and also review the day of a week, time of day. Ex: 历史课 （history），生物课（biology），数学课 （math），中文课 （Chinese），体育课 （PE）， 都不一样 (totally different），不太一样 （not exactly the same)
Students will identify the 5 senses on the face in Chinese, what they can do, and also other parts on our body and their purpose. Ex: 听（listen），闻（smell），吃（eat），手（hand）， 腿 （leg），踢球（kick the ball）， 玩游戏 （play games）
Students will learn and review different room names of a house, location of the room, position of the things, activities in each room, color and units. Ex: 客厅 （living room)，厨房 (Kitchen)，客厅里有沙发 (sofa in the living room)，主卧室有蓝色的床 (A blue bed in the master bedroom)， 一个书房 ( a study) ， 一只小猫 (a cat).
Students will identify different animals in the zoo, review vocabulary of size and color; and also use different adjectives and conjunction words to describe an animal. Ex: 长颈鹿 （giraffe），斑马(zebra)，袋鼠(kangaroo)，又可爱又漂亮的熊猫 (pretty and lovely panda)，大象的鼻子又长又粗 （elephant has a long and thick nose)
Students will learn how to invite a friend to a party, special events， activities in a party， and how to accept and decline invitations politely. Ex: 你星期六有空吗 （Are you available on Saturday ？) 请你来我家玩 (Please come play at my home), 我们先玩游戏再吃饭 (We will play games before having dinner).
Students will learnabout different Chinese food, how to order in a Chinese restaurant, the taste of different Chinese dishes, price, and review adjectives and units. Ex: 烤鸭 （baked duck)，古老肉 (sweet and sour pork)，西兰花 (broccoli)，酸(sour)，辣( spicy hot)， 苦 (bitter)， 一杯茶 (a cup of tea)， 一只鸭 ( a duck)， 一碗饭 ( a bowl of rice) ，一本书 (a book)，二十四块钱 (24 dollars).
This course requires a properly maintained computer with high-speed internet access and an up-to-date web browser (such as Chrome or Firefox). The student must be able to communicate with the instructor via email. Visit the Technical Requirements and Support page for more details.
This course uses an online virtual classroom for discussions with the instructor. The classroom works on standard computers with the Adobe Connect Add-in or Adobe Flash plugin, and also tablets or handhelds that support the Adobe Connect Mobile app. Students who are unable to attend live sessions will need a computer with the Adobe Connect Add-in or Adobe Flash plugin installed to watch recorded meetings. The Adobe Connect Add-in, Adobe Flash plugin, and Adobe Connect Mobile app are available for free download. Students who do not have the Flash plug-in installed or enabled on their browsers will be prompted to download and install the Adobe Connect add-in when accessing the virtual classroom.
Most course lectures may be viewed on mobile devices, but in some cases assignments and quizzes must be completed on a desktop or laptop computer.
