About the Course

During this Inventions mini course, we'll explore the principles of invention by focusing on Rube Goldberg machines, an intentionally intricate device that executes a simple task through a series of elaborate, indirect steps. Named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who was famous for illustrating such whimsical contraptions, these machines operate via chain reactions to accomplish straightforward actions, like turning a page, cracking an egg, or switching on a light. Students will delve into the mechanics of Rube Goldberg machines, experimenting with building their own models to understand the science behind these contraptions. You'll uncover the magic of invention and apply creative thinking while engaging in discussions and problem-solving with peers in our virtual classroom, then do hands-on work in your own time. Time commitment: 2.5-3.5 hours per week (1.5 hours of class time, 1-2 hours of independent work). Course will include 3 sessions over 3 weeks. Course Overview Learning Objectives: Explain the science basics behind Rube Goldberg machines Design, build, and test a Rube Goldberg machine that performs a specific task Assess and provide constructive feedback on peers' Rube Goldberg machine designs based on collaboratively established criteria for effectiveness and innovation About Mini Courses Taught over 1-3 sessions, these short survey courses are designed to give students the opportunity to sample a topic, engage with a community of advanced learners, and take a course that suits their busy schedule.
