Eligibility CTY’s Civic Leadership Institute brings together a diverse group of bright, motivated high school students with an interest in service and a desire to develop their leadership and citizenship skills. You are eligible for this program if you: - will have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade by Summer 2008;
- are a CTY Talent Search participant or another academically talented student;
- have a sincere interest in learning about communities, social issues, and active citizenship.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate academic aptitude through strong scores on the SAT I or an equivalent nationally-normed standardized achievement test. In addition, applicants should use the student essay (see below) to demonstrate their interest and/or experience in the areas of service, leadership, and civic responsibility. Note to CTY Alumni One compelling element of this program for returning CTY participants is the opportunity to enjoy another unforgettable CTY experience, even after students have “aged out” of many other CTY programs. While this is indeed a benefit of attending, the Civic Leadership Institute is also unique from other CTY programs in its singular focus on one curricular area. As a result, the students most likely to enjoy this program and succeed in it are those with a genuine interest in committing their summer to service and citizenship. Application Process There are two ways to apply for this program. The first is to apply online. Please note that if you choose this option, you cannot apply for financial aid. You may also download an application form and mail or fax it to us. If you plan on applying for financial aid, you need to download a financial aid application form. The financial aid form must be included with the program application. The application also requires a Student Essay, a one-page, approximately 250-word essay, conceived of and written by the applicant, describing his/her reasons for wanting to attend the CTY Civic Leadership Institute and what he/she hopes to gain from participating in the program. Please include the student's name and student ID number, if known, on the essay. Submit the essay via email to ctycli@jhu.edu. Applications must be received by April 5, 2008 (extended to 4/19). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and space is limited, so students are encouraged to apply early to increase their chances of being accepted into the program. Notification Students are notified of the status of their application within four weeks of receipt of a complete application. Accepted students receive a Course Assignment Packet at that time, with all relevant details about the program and site, including travel information, opening and closing day schedules, a list of things to bring, health and medical information, rules and policies, etc. Late Applications Late applications are accepted, and considered as space in the program permits. Applications received April 20, 2008 or later are assessed a late fee. Late registration closes on June 7, 2008 for Session 1, and June 28, 2008 for Session 2. |
