The Living Classrooms Foundation (LCF) of Baltimore, in conjunction with Johns Hopkins University, is in its fourteenth summer of sponsoring programs dedicated to the hands-on exploration of marine sciences. LCF is a non-profit organization for alternative education that serves students of all ages and provides over 35 different land and shipboard programs to more than 50,000 students each year. The home base for students taking Marine Sciences courses in Baltimore is the Notre Dame of Maryland University. Founded in 1873 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the university is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the northern part of Baltimore. Approximately 50 students and 12 staff are expected to attend the site. Second session students enrolled in the Whales course will be based at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI. Students spend one half of the session living and studying on campus. They spend the other half of the session traveling aboard the LCF ships Sigsbee or Lady Maryland. At mid-session, students who began the session on campus embark on their trip, and those who began in the field return to campus. While Marine Sciences courses are a great deal of fun, they also require a significant amount of both physical and mental work. In the field, the residential experience more closely resembles camping than typical campus living. All students participate in the daily operation and maintenance of their vessels (including night watch for the Whales students), and those in the Chesapeake Bay course also camp at various primitive shore-side sites during their field experience. Students share with the staff the responsibilities of setting up and striking camp, cooking, and cleaning. Teamwork is essential for everyone to enjoy these more primitive living experiences. Transportation: For the Baltimore site, a student shuttle service is available only from Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI) and Baltimore’s Penn Station. You will receive maps, directions, and shuttle service details with your course notification. Note: Second session students enrolled in the Whales and Estuary Systems course will spend the land portion of their class at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. Top |
