Intensive Studies (Grades 7 and Above)

Intensive Studies

To be eligible for any CTY Intensive Studies course in 2012, students must have:

  • completed 7th grade by summer 2012
  • been born on or after September 1, 1995, and no later than June 30, 2000

AND

  • achieved the required minimum scores on at least one of the tests CTY recognizes for eligibility purposes. These tests are SAT, ACT, Advanced SCAT, and or Spatial Test Battery (STB).

Eligibility requirements are in two subject area categories: math and science; and writing and humanities. You may be eligible in just one area, or both. The minimum score requirements can be downloaded below. Some courses have additional prerequisites; please check the course descriptions in the Intensive Studies catalog.

CTY's Talent Search offers all of the tests mentioned above. Once you achieve the qualifying score(s) for a subject area, you remain eligible until you reach the age limit for the program. You need not retest to continue participating.

Academic Explorations (Grades 7 and Above)

Academic Explorations

To be eligible for any Academic Explorations course in 2012, students must have:

  • completed 7th grade by summer 2012
  • been born on or after September 1, 1995, and no later than June 20, 2000

AND

  • achieved the required minimum scores on at least one of the tests CTY recognizes for eligibility purposes. These tests are SAT, ACT, Advanced SCAT, and/or Spatial Test Battery (STB). Required scores can be downloaded below.

Eligibility requirements are in two subject categories: math and science; and writing and humanities. You may be eligible in just one area, or both. Some courses have additional prerequisites; please check the course descriptions in the Academic Explorations catalog.

Young Students (Grades 2-6)

Young Students (Grs. 2-6)

Eligibility for CTY Young Students summer programs courses is based upon scores earned on an above-grade-level SCAT (School and College Ability Test), either alone or in combination with CTY’s Spatial Test Battery (STB). Required scores can be downloaded below.

Students’ eligibility for CTY Young Students summer programs is valid from the year they test through the summer after 6th grade, even if they choose not to attend the program immediately.

Note to 6th graders: We also have summer programs for students who have completed 7th grade or above. Qualifying scores from SAT, ACT, Advanced SCAT and/or Spatial Test Battery are required. If you last tested in 5th grade or before, you must take one of these tests and qualify to continue. If you tested this year, as a 6th grader, and met the scores shown for 6th graders in the chart below, you are eligible for corresponding courses in the 7th grade and above programs without retesting.

Civic Leadership Institute (Grades 10-12)

Civic Leadership

CTY’s Civic Leadership Institute brings together a diverse group of bright, motivated high school students with an interest in service and a desire to develop their leadership and citizenship skills.

You are eligible for this program if you:

  • will have completed grade 10, 11, or 12 by Summer 2012;
  • are a CTY Talent Search participant or another academically talented student;
  • have a sincere interest in learning about communities, social issues, and active citizenship.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate academic aptitude through strong scores on the SAT I or an equivalent nationally-normed standardized achievement test. In addition, applicants should use the student essay (please refer to the Civic Leadership Admissions Page) to demonstrate their interest and/or experience in the areas of service, leadership, and civic responsibility.

Princeton: Global Issues in the 21st Century (Grades 10-12)

CTY’s program at Princeton brings together approximately 180 bright, motivated high school students with an interest in the global issues and challenges of the twenty-first century.

You are eligible for this program if you:

  • will have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade by Summer 2012;

AND

  • have required minimum scores on the SAT, combination of SAT and Spatial Test Battery (STB), or ACT. Please see the eligibility charts.

Hong Kong (Grades 5-10)

Hong Kong

You are eligible for the CTY Hong Kong program if you:

  • have completed 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th grade (years 6 through 11 in 13-year schools, ESF schools, for example) and are 10 years old by June 30, 2012, and have not turned 17 before September 1, 2012.

AND

  • have required minimum scores on the SCAT, SAT or ACT, combination of the SAT or ACT and Spatial Test Battery (STB), or World Class Test (WCT). Please see more information below.

All grades:

  • World Class Test (WCT) Option: Math, Computer Science and Science Courses
  • Math and Computer Science Qualifying Score: Distinction on Mathematics section of the WCT
  • Science Qualifying Score: Distinction on both Mathematics and Problem Solving sections of the WCT.
  • Information about the World Class Test can be found at http://talent.ust.hk/ in both Chinese and English with background about the test, application procedures, and sample questions.
