Research Department Staff Directory

Below is a list of the major responsibilities and activities of the research staff. In addition, all of these staff collaborate with CTY's staff in other departments. These collaborative efforts have generated a large body of written work. Articles, papers, and books written by CTY's staff are listed in the Research Bibliography.

  • Carol Mills, Ph.D. (Director of Research)
    Oversees major research and evaluation initiatives, writes grants, develops long-range strategic plans for the department, and consults with other CTY departments about issues of assessment and research design. Major interests include identification of academically talented youth, education of academically talented youth, gender differences, personality and learning styles, gifted students with learning disabilities, and disadvantaged and at-risk students. Serves as co-director of the Diagnostic & Counseling Center.

  • Karen Ablard Mickenberg, Ph.D. (Senior Researcher)
    Conducts research and evaluation projects and writes research articles for publication pertaining to the education of academically talented youth, metacognition, motivation, self-perceptions, and parents of gifted youth. Writes grant applications and technical reports. Reviews for the Journal of Educational Psychology.  Assists in the Diagnostic & Counseling Center by administering tests and writing reports.

  • Philip G. Baxley, J.D., M.L.S. (Psychometrician)
    Develops new tests and new forms of paper and pencil and computer-based tests. Acts as liaison with computerized test delivery contractor to troubleshoot score report or other technical issues. Coordinates with the Center for Talent Identification to develop test interpretation materials and informational brochures. Oversees processing of Spatial Test Battery score reports and provides test result interpretation. Updates and maintains Research Department Internet web pages.  pbaxley@jhu.edu (410) 735-6241

  • Heinrich Stumpf, D. Phil. (Research Consultant)
    Conducts research studies (e.g., psychometric studies) and writes papers for publication on identification of scientific talent, cognitive processes, spatial ability (and the Spatial Test Battery (STB)), gender differences, and implicit theories of scientific innovation. Develops computer programs. Developed test battery to measure spatial ability and continues to create new test forms. Consults on general issues of test construction, validation, and computerization.

  • Kimberly Lohrfink, Ph.D. (Senior Researcher)
    Conducts internal evaluation research with children participating in CTY's summer programs. Works as an external evaluation specialist on projects relating to the education of academically talented youth. Conducts research projects pertaining to the development and education of gifted youth, primarily under-represented students such as those served by the Next Generation Venture Fund. Writes evaluation reports, papers for publications and presents research findings at educational conferences. klohrfi1@jhu.edu (410) 735-6236

  • Katie Locke, B.A. (Testing and Evaulation Coordinator)
    Assists in the management of non-traditional testing by scoring tests and reporting test scores. Provides training to CTY staff on compliance with Standards for Education and Psychological testing. Advises school administrators on appropriate tests and test administration practices. Oversees the CTY test licensing program. Collaborates with the CTY Psychometrician to develop new test itmes and new forms of tests.   • Sheila Tubman (Administrative Assistant)
    Assists research staff by organizing and scheduling meetings, revising documents, creating graphics, and other clerical tasks. Maintains the operation of CTY's library by ordering, circulating, cataloging, and searching for materials. Revises CTY's Bibliography. Formats and distributes CTY's technical reports. Coordinates mailings and processes data for major research studies. Answers questions regarding the Diagnostic & Counseling Center, as well as orders and processes testing materials. stubman1@jhu.edu (410) 735-6241.
