HONG KONG, S.A.R. / BALTIMORE April 2012 — The academic achievements of some of the most academically advanced second through eighth grade students from 10 countries across Asia were celebrated at the fourth annual International Academic Awards Ceremony hosted by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The ceremony was held Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. 

The 600 exceptional primary and secondary students invited hail from Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. They earned their opportunity for recognition by participating in the annual CTY Talent Search and performing exceptionally well on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to academically talented second through eighth grade students.

During the Talent Search, which is going on now, advanced young learners take above-grade level tests designed for older students as a means of gaining insight into their abilities. Seventh and eighth graders take the SAT or ACT—the same tests used for college admissions. These students, along with second through sixth graders, can take the SCAT, an above-level test.

More than 50,000 students from 120 countries participated in this year’s CTY Talent Search. Because of the difficulty of the tests, only 25 to 30 percent of students who participated earned an invitation to a CTY Awards Ceremony where they are individually honored for their academic performance and potential.

“We are so proud of all our CTY Talent Search honorees for their exceptional performance on these tests and we are thrilled to take this moment to recognize them for their academic achievements,” says Elaine Tuttle Hansen, executive director of CTY. Students aren’t the only ones who deserve this recognition, she adds. “Our students wouldn’t be who they are today without the parents and educators who have worked so hard to help them develop their talents.”

The students honored at the Hong Kong CTY Ceremony also may have qualified for CTY’s day and residential summer programs, online classes, and family academic programs, where gifted students join a community of learners from around the world and discover where their special talents may take them.
CTY’s presence in Asia goes beyond discovering the academic talents of some of the bright young students who live there.

In 2010, the Center established a Summer Program with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) that has enrolled more than 400 students. This summer, some 250 CTY students in middle and high school will spend three weeks at the HKUST site delving into courses ranging from Cryptology and Robotics to Creative Writing.
