More Information (READ THIS BEFORE YOU APPLY)

Typical instructor qualifications. If you don't meet these, you probably should not apply. Do not apply if you are employed full time.

  • All our current writing instructors hold at least one advanced degree. A significant number hold two, including the Ph.D. We consider current graduate students, but rarely hire outside the Preferred Qualifications disciplines (i.e., Comp Lit, International Languages, etc. should not expect to be considered without several years of college-level teaching experience in composition and/or rhetoric and very strong college-level student evaluations and supervisory recommendations).
  • All our current writing instructors have at least 2 semesters experience teaching in the relevant area at the college level, or at least 2 terms of CTY Summer Programs teaching experience.
  • Almost all our current writing instructors have familiarity with the age group (age varies by course).
  • Almost all new writing hires have distance education experience.
  • All new hires must have excellent self-motivated organizational skills.
  • Web-based courses use a course management system (currently Moodle 1.9+). Experience with such systems is highly desirable, but lack of experience does not exclude applicants. Training takes about 2 hours. Increasingly, our writing applicants have experience as either a teacher or a student in a course management system.
