Hiring for CTYOnline is very competitive. Each year, we receive many more applications for prospective Critical Reading Instructors than we have positions available.
- track student work and remind students of deadlines when necessary;
- monitor student discussion forums to ensure that students are interacting appropriately;
- participate to maintain a lively critical reading discussion forum;
- provide feedback for each student each lesson about the work posted;
- compose mid course progress reports for students in academic difficulty;
- help students use the online course management system; and
- write final evaluations of student work for each student who completes the course.
Basic Qualifications
The position requires a BA in Reading, Writing, English Lit, or Education and at least one year teaching experience in relevant area. Additional education may be substituted for experience.
- Applicants must have broadband internet connections.
- Applicants must have email and the basic tech skills we expect of students. Our primary mode of communication with instructors is through email. Instructors check their email at least twice a day.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in Reading, Writing, English, or Education and experience working with age group (7-14) is preferred.
Experience working with gifted students and online course management systems is helpful.

- All our current instructors hold at least one advanced degree. We consider current graduate students, but rarely hire outside the Preferred Qualifications disciplines.
- All our current instructors have at least 2 semesters experience teaching in the relevant area at the college level, or at least 2 terms of CTY Summer Programs teaching experience.
- Almost all our current instructors have familiarity with the age group (see preferred qualifications).
- Almost all new hires have distance education experience.
- All new hires must have excellent self-motivated organizational skills.
- Web-based courses use a course management system (currently Moodle 1.9+). Experience with such systems is highly desirable, but lack of experience does not exclude applicants. Training takes about 2 hours. Increasingly, our applicants have experience as either a teacher or a student in a course management system.
