Applicants most likely to be selected for interviews submit materials that focus on the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
The position requires a BA in Linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, creative writing, or composition and rhetoric. Ability to write substantive critiques of 300+ words. Experience teaching non-native speakers of English or grammar at the high school or middle school levels. Additional education may be substituted for experience.
- Applicants must have broadband Internet connection.
- Applicants must have email and the basic tech skills we expect of students. Our primary mode of communication with instructors is through email. Instructors check their email at least twice a day
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer advanced degree in Linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, or related fields. Experience working with age group (7 - 10 for Building Blocks, 9 - 12 for Grammar FUNdamentals, and 12 - 17 for From Structure to Style). Experience working with gifted students and online course management systems helpful.

Applicants must provide a written response to the prompt “Required Writing Sample for Prospective Linguistics Instructors."

- All our current instructors hold at least one advanced degree. We consider current graduate students, but rarely hire outside the Preferred Qualifications disciplines.
- All our current instructors for our two linguistics courses (Building Blocks and From Structure to Style) have at least 2 semesters experience teaching in the relevant area at the college level, or at least 2 terms of CTY Summer Programs teaching experience.
- Instructors for Grammar Fundamentals will also be considered who have experience teaching grammar at the middle school and high school levels.
- Almost all our current instructors have familiarity with the age group (see preferred qualifications).
- Almost all new hires have distance education experience.
- All new hires must have excellent self-motivated organizational skills.
- Web-based courses use a course management system (currently Moodle 1.9+). Experience with such systems is highly desirable, but lack of experience does not exclude applicants. Training takes about 2 hours. Increasingly, our applicants have experience as either a teacher or a student in a course management system.
