American Visionary Art Museum
Baltimore, MD
Spend a day at the American Visionary Art Museum, the national repository for self-taught artists. Take a guided tour of the latest exhibition, The Marriage of Art, Science, and Philosophy and learn the amazing stories of the artists. Become inspired to create your own stories and put them into untraditional book forms. Once you have the forms you will have the challenge of trying to marry form and content. There will be no lack of inspiration in the museum, as the artists use non-traditional materials and methods. Come and discover possibilities that others do not see—that is what visionaries do best!

Headlands InstituteGolden Gate National Recreation AreaSausalito, California
On this fascinating journey of the Marin Headlands, discover anemones, sea stars, mussels, and more while exploring the tide pools at South Rodeo Beach. During this exciting environmental adventure, identify species and make observations about how each organism is specially adapted to survive in this harsh habitat, and then collect plankton from a lagoon and take it back to the lab. In the state-of-the-art marine lab, take scientific investigation of tide pool life to a deeper level of understanding through the use of microscopes. Discover how cultures around the world relate to the ocean through the investigation of multicultural stories, foods, and traditions related to the ocean. Explore physiology, adaptations, and food chains in this amazing study of intertidal habitat and our relationship with the ocean.

San Diego Museum of ManSan Diego, CA
In this intriguing, hands-on program, learn about basic forensic anthropology and bone identification—­did that skull from long ago undergo brain surgery? Take part in a workshop that explores laws that protect archaeological sites—why should we leave artifacts where we find them? Decipher some ancient Maya and Egyptian hieroglyphs­—how did the ancient Mayans count? Examine skull reproduction of humans and other closely related hominids, discover what kinds of information can be learned by studying bones, and watch a bone-casting demonstration. Try your hand at interpreting information,then write an enticing label to put into an actual exhibit!

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to host an exciting day of activities for CTY! Past programs have included energetic and interactive workshops with classical musicians, Broadway artists, Shakespearean actors, and even a musical comedy improv group. Lincoln Center prides itself on providing high-quality, up-close and interactive encounters with world-class performing artists. The CTY day will include a special guest presentation, two interactive Meet-the-Artist performance workshops, and an official Lincoln Center Guided Tour. Families will have the unique opportunity to witness the final stages of Lincoln Center’s transformation while on their tours of theaters like the Metropolitan Opera, Avery Fisher Hall, and the New York State Theater. Get up onstage with our artists and perform in the Kaplan Penthouse! Learn about what it takes to pursue a career in the performing arts! Join us for an incredible day of family fun and entertaining education. Become an editor for a day and learn what makes something news, and why certain stories matter to specific communities. Become familiar with some of the ethical issues faced by journalists as they work to be accurate, fair, and clear. Grapple with the dilemmas of anonymous sources, privacy, quotes, and censorship by examining real life case studies. Come to understand the process newspapers use to create the front page and, in doing so, become a more informed news consumer through role playing and discussion. In this amazing program, you will begin to understand how difficult it is to achieve the Three Guiding Principles of Journalism: Fairness, Accuracy, and Clarity! Due to the large number of fascinating galleries that can’t be visited during the program, every participant will be given a free ticket which will be good through December 31 to return to the Newseum and explore on his/her own.

National Building MuseumWashington, DC
What is design? Just like engineers, architects, and city planners, we use the design process every day to identify solutions to problems. Explore how we design our world and learn how our communities are constructed through interactive discussions and hands-on activities. Investigate how engineers and city planners are working to create more environmentally-friendly places to live. Build a 6 ½ x 13’ geodesic dome, engineer a container to drop an egg 50 feet without breaking, and plan and build a city— all in one day!

OceanQuest & Massachusetts Maritime AcademyBuzzards Bay, MA (Cape Cod)
What could be better than a “Day on the Bay” in beautiful Cape Cod? This program has been designed specifically for CTY and has it all! Take a mini ocean research voyage on board the Venture Inn II and while enjoying the sea breeze: conduct scientific experiments, tow for plankton, learn about and handle local sea life, collect water samples, and determine the major chemical aspects of the ocean. Discover why our ocean is the reason life exists and how changes in the ocean may affect our future. Learn the environmental significance and mechanism of wind energy by touring a turbine site. Take part in an ecological exploration of coastal wetlands that are filled with a variety of creatures that make the brackish water connecting inland rivers and ocean tides their home. Tour the Kennedy, the Academy’s training ship, which is a floating classroom, outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. This is a program like no other—water, wind, and wetlands!

North East, MD 
Spend the day at NorthBay, a beautiful, new environmental center located on Elk Neck Peninsula which is at the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. NorthBay has a state-of-the-art environmental center and is committed to helping you experience real environmental science in the field, as well as in the classroom, through an interactive, hands-on approach. Spend time on The Ms. Nancy, NorthBay’s research vessel, and take part in activities such as using an otter trawl net for fisheries research and conducting bivalve research and exploration of turtles in pocket wetlands in the area. During this exciting, educational experience, learn how your actions have a lasting impact on your future, the environment, and the people around you.

Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research CenterLedyard, CT
Join educators, archaeologists, botanists, and historians in an archaeology-based exploration of a 1675 Mashantucket Pequot fortified village. During this exciting day, you will work alongside professional archaeologists at a real archaeological site and help excavate the midden or garbage dump from the village to research the technology, foods, environments, and habitats used by Pequot people in the seventeenth century. Learn the techniques used by archaeologists in the laboratory to identify the animal and plant remains and artifacts you have excavated, and how to make an archaeological map of your findings. You will have the opportunity to visit a museum exhibit about the fort you have just excavated and analyzed. During this hands-on, one-of-a-kind program, discover how your findings will contribute to our ongoing knowledge and understanding of native life in the seventeenth century!

Monterey Bay AquariumMonterey, CA
Experience the wonders of Monterey Bay by taking what you learn on shore and applying it aboard the Aquarium’s sailing vessel. Begin the day with a private sea otter feeding and training session at the Aquarium, as well as a guided tour of the galleries with a naturalist to get an insider’s view of the exhibits. Take a guided walk along historic Cannery Row to Fisherman’s Wharf. Board a sailboat designed for ocean research, and work with naturalists. Get your hands wet gathering plankton, testing water samples, and observing the fascinating bottom-dwelling creatures in the samples. Along the way, you may get to see sea lions, dolphins, and sea otters!

The Cloisters Museum and Gardens –
New York, NY
Join us for this truly unique experience at The Cloisters, a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. Long cherished as a world-class museum, The Cloisters also contains beautiful gardens featuring plants, fruit trees, and useful herbs familiar from the collection’s medieval tapestries and other works of art. Take fascinating, docent-led tours of the Museum and Gardens, and see demonstrations of and participate in discussions about manuscript illumination, stained glass, and stone-carving. The Cloisters— assembled with Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements dating from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries— is itself a New York City landmark, overlooking sweeping vistas of the Hudson River in Upper Manhattan. The spaces, rooms, and gardens provide a harmonious setting where you will be able to completely experience the tradition of medieval artistry. This is a program you will not want to miss!

Please note: This program will run from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. Included in the price: morning refreshments, a box lunch, admission to The Cloisters at the conclusion of the program, and free passes to The Cloisters and to The Metropolitan Museum of Art which can be used at anytime.

Registration Information
At least one parent or guardian must register and attend with the student(s). Siblings will be admitted only if they have been registered for the event. All students and siblings must be at least ten years of age to attend all Discovery programs. Registration is strictly limited, and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. These are popular events, and locations fill up quickly. Please watch this website for the most up-to-date information of program details and site closings.

You may register for the above programs by Registering Online or by submitting our Registration Form via fax or mail.

Payment Information
Payments submitted will be processed automatically upon receipt. However, your family’s reservation is secured only when you receive your written confirmation. In the event that the program is filled, you will be issued a complete credit and put on a waiting list. Please do not purchase non-refundable airline tickets or make hotel reservations until you receive your registration confirmation.

Please note that all past due balances (for any CTY program) must be paid prior to registration for a Family Academic Program. All payments will be applied to past due balances first.

Cancellation Policy
For cancellations made 30 days or more prior to the event, registrants will be charged a processing fee of $25 per family for one-day events. From 29 to 15 days prior, registrants will be charged one-half of the total amount paid. There will be no credit for any cancellations received less than 15 days before the event.

Logistics
Specific information pertinent to your location, including exact times and directions to the event, will be mailed to you prior to the program date. Information about lunch will be provided in the confirmation materials.
