Career Symposia, Grades 10 - 12

All CTY Talent Search participants are eligible to attend Family Academic Programs. There are no minimum qualifying scores required, so do not wait for test scores to sign up. Register now! Please see below for additional registration information.

Sixty percent of college students change majors at least once, often delaying graduation and resulting in more college expenses than expected. CTY’s Career Symposia can help you make better choices during college and discover career opportunities that may be right for you! Symposia students are introduced to a variety of career opportunities related to their mathematical, verbal, and creative talents. We offer these symposia in an effort to assist talent search participants and their families in their educational and career planning. Each day-long symposium consists of a keynote presentation; panels of professionals discussing their career fields; career counselors offering their advice; and college students and young professionals describing their perspectives on educational options and planning. Each session concludes with a question and answer period, offering participants an opportunity to seek advice on their individual concerns and questions. Overlap between industries ranging from medicine and technology to international relations, global economy, and advanced communications, clearly indicates that 21st  century careers will demand a broad, well-balanced educational background. We hope that by exploring career options early, students will be able to plan strong college programs and make informed decisions about the future.

During a symposium you will...

  • Discover the value of internships and study abroad programs,
  • Pinpoint the skills and foundation you will need to be successful,
  • Set priorities to reach your goals,
  • Connect with professionals from a wide array of fields,
  • Make the most of your unique abilities!

During the day you will meet with...

Professionals

  • How and why did they choose their careers?
  • What contributed to changes in their career paths?
  • What are the day-to-day responsibilities and favorite aspects of their jobs?
  • What are some future skill requirements and economic demands in various fields?
  • How can gifted students develop an interest into a career?

Career Counselors

  • How does a student start looking for a job?
  • What skills are important in every profession?
  • What are reasonable salary expectations in a changing economy?
  • What is some good advice on interviews, resumes, and networking?
  • What resources are available during the job search?

Current College Students

  • How did they discover internship opportunities and how did the internships shape their career paths?
  • How has study abroad influenced their perspectives and career decisions?
  • How can volunteering relate to your professional goals?
  • How does being a leader on campus translate into success in the work world?
