Q: How do students become eligible to enroll in CTYOnline courses?

A: CTYOnline courses are appropriate for academically highly able students who are typically admitted based on their performance on above grade level tests. These tests are used to assess each student's strengths and to determine eligibility for either verbal or math courses. Most students are admitted through the CTY Global Talent Search, through which the testing is arranged. For more details about eligibility and admissions, including qualifying scores by grade level, visit CTYOnline Eligibility or contact ctyinschool@jhu.edu.  CTY also works directly with schools to help identify students, and CTY staff members are available to conduct testing in the school for groups of students.

Q: Who are the CTYOnline faculty?

A: CTYOnline instructors are well qualified in the subject matter they teach. Most hold advanced degrees, including the Ph.D., in their fields. CTYOnline instructors are familiar with academically able students and their special needs. Students are each assigned a CTYOnline faculty member to guide the student through the course, provide encouragement and feedback, and evaluate student performance. They communicate with instructors through email, web-based whiteboard, online virtual classrooms, and phone. In Individually paced courses such as math, computer science and technology, and most science courses, students progress at their own pace guided by instructors who meet individual needs. CTYOnline instructors review completed work and communicate with students to ensure mastery of content. CTYOnline emphasizes frequent instructor-student interaction and assessment to monitor progress and ensure the student is making satisfactory progress. Visit Faculty for sample biographies.

Q: What kinds of course materials are used?

A: CTYOnline brings together the best resources for each course, which may include mutimedia and other resources developed by CTY, licensed software, web-based resources, interactive whiteboard, virtual classrooms, texts, student guides, and CD-ROMS. Materials are mailed to the student's home or directly to the school, if requested. Some courses may require a separate textbook or materials purchase. See the CTYOnline catalog or course descriptions for prerequisites, detailed course information, system requirements, and other details.

Q: Is there a syllabus for each course?

A: Every course description contains Detailed Course Information that provides a syllabus, course objectives, or a demo. To view course descriptions, visit Course list.

Back

Q: How are students evaluated and graded?

A: Depending on the course, students are evaluated through frequent quizzes, tests, midterms, finals, written assignments, and projects. They receive feedback from their instructors based on their performance, and the final grade and report card period grades are provided to schools for school-based students. CTYOnline instructors also provide a written evaluation of each student's performance, and recommendations for further study.

Q: Can schools and parents view a sample course?

A:  The web site contains detailed course descriptions, and many include demos of some of the software used for that course.  For a walkthrough of sample courses, please contact ctyinschool@jhu.edu.

Q: Can schools be given a report showing all student work for the week?

A: Schools can be provided with student login information so that administrators and teachers can view and print a student's grades and progress. In addition, schools that submit a School Information Update Form can be sent quarterly progress reports for the specific reporting periods requested.

To arrange that interim progress reports and report card grades should be sent to a school, download the School Information Update Form, and then fax the completed form to 1-866-646-3816.

Q: Can parents be given copies of assignments and progress reports?

A: Yes, parents can log in as their children to print copies of assignments and to view their children's progress.

Q: What computer and internet access must be made available to students who participate in CTYOnline courses during their school day?

A: Each school must have adequate computer equipment and facilities to run the software for the proposed number of students. The school is responsible for supplying all the necessary computer hardware. All equipment should be secured before software and course materials are shipped. Visit the Plugins and Support pages for general technical  requirements; specific computer requirements for each course are provided in each online course description.

The amount of time each student will need to work at the computer varies depending on the course and other factors, and flexible schedules can be arranged to fit the needs of the school and student. For example, many schools arrange for students to go to the library or computer lab for one class period, especially if they are replacing a more advanced CTYOnline course for the regular in-grade course. Since CTYOnline's courses can be accessed from anywhere, many students also make further progress from home. See the course descriptions for the average workload involved in session-based courses that have specific start and end dates.

Q: What in-school support is needed for students participating in CTYOnline courses during the school day?

A: An onsite teacher or administrator should serve as the liaison to CTY, communicating with CTYOnline instructors or administrative staff as needed. The school liaison helps to ensure that the student has access to a computer with internet access in a setting that supports learning.

Back

Q: What are the tuition and fees for CTYOnline courses?

A: Tuition varies according to the course, and can be found online at Tuition and fees. Please contact ctyinschool@jhu.edu for information about school discounts.

Back

Q: How does a student enroll in a CTYOnline school-based course?

A: To enroll students, schools should complete the online Application form or the paper application form and submit a School Information Update Form  for each student. If a school will be paying tuition and fees with a purchase order, list the purchase order number on the payment section of each application. A school account will be created for billing purposes. If parents are responsible for tuition and fees, they should complete the payment section of the application form. The completed application can be submitted online and the School Information Update form (and Purchase Order, if applicable) should be faxed to 1-866-646-3816.

Back

Q: How does a school reenroll a student?

A: To re-enroll, please print out the two page Re-enrollment Form and fax the completed form to 1-866-646-3816.

Back

Q: Do students receive course completion documents?

A: Each student who successfully completes a CTYOnline course receives completion documents, which include a final grade for the course, recommended school credit, and a recommendation for the next successive course. Students also may order a CTY Official Academic Record.

Back

Q: Is CTY an accredited institution? Does CTY offer degrees or diplomas?

A: The Center for Talented Youth is accredited for grades 5 through 12 by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of College and Schools. While CTY is an accredited institution, it does not offer any degrees or diplomas. The student's school awards placement and/or credit as appropriate for specific coursework taken through CTY based on the school's policies. The CTYOnline program for schools is designed to supplement and expand the school's capabilities in gifted education through online education.
