Placement Tests

Placement Testing is a free, online service that is provided by CTYOnline to assure the most appropriate placement into CTYOnline math, computer science, or world language courses, or for certain CTY Summer Programs courses such as the CTY Physics course in Hong Kong.  Only students with qualifying math scores should register for any math or most computer science placement tests. Students enrolling in Web Design or JavaScript (which are open to both math or verbal qualifiers) should register for the appropriate computer science placement test.

To register for a CTYOnline math or computer science placement test, the student must fill out the form at https://ctyjhu.org/surveys/placement/math.cfm [Note: The student's last name and CTY ID number will be needed to complete the registration.]

Once CTY receives your request for a math or computer science placement test, you will receive a login and password to access the site. The student will need to read the Terms of Use, agree to the Honor Code, and follow the online directions.

  • Immediate feedback from math placement testing provides guidance about the most appropriate online math course(s).
  • If the placement testing is for computer science, the feedback provided will help the student to select the most appropriate computer science course.
  • If the test is for determining eligibility for CTY's Physics course in Hong Kong, the student will be notified of eligibility within one week of taking the test.
  • World language placement tests are also available upon request to ctyonline@jhu.edu to help determine the appropriate placement for a CTYOnline Arabic, Chinese, or Spanish language course.
  • Any student who has difficulty accessing the site after one business day should contact ctyonline@jhu.edu .
