Summer Session Information

About the Summer Sessions

Many parents prefer a relaxed summer session that allows families to take a week or two of vacation. Yet, many students prefer an intensive session like those in the famous CTY summer residential programs. We offer both!

Sample summer session daily calendars are available on each course desciption. Click "Summer Schedules."

Early Summer - Longer and Relaxed

Early Summer - Relaxed

The early summer session has a relatively relaxed schedule. All Writing Series courses except Crafting Poetry are offered only in the email format. Writing Series courses are offered in 12 week sessions with the assumption that students may take up to two weeks' vacation or finish their course up to two weeks early.

Language Arts courses are all web-based and are offered on a 12 week schedule, with the assumption again that students may take up to two weeks' vacation. Students can schedule their two week-long vacations at their own convenience but must notify the instructor at the start of the course. Students are expected to keep up with their reading during their vacation time so that it won't be hard to catch up with missing course work on their return.

When not on vacation, students are expected to meet scheduled due dates. Writing Series students spend 3.5 hours of coursework weekly (5 hours/week for Crafting Poetry), and Language Arts students should expect at least 3 hours of coursework weekly.

Midsummer - Short and Intensive

Midsummer - Intensive

The midsummer writing and language arts schedule is an intensive version of an academic year session. All Writing Series and Language Arts courses are web-based except the Process of Writing, Writing for an Audience, and Crafting Fiction, which are email-based.

  • 20-week Writing Series courses are compressed into 6 weeks.
  • 10-week Language Arts courses are compressed into 5 weeks.
  • Writing Series students spend 1.5 to 2 hours of coursework daily.
  • Language Arts students spend 6 hours of coursework weekly.
Note: This time commitment is not feasible when a student is also on vacation, at camp, or in a CTY summer program (neither residential nor commuter). Students enrolled in CTY summer programs must schedule their CTYOnline writing or language arts courses for a different time period.
