CTY welcomes homeschoolers! You may have heard about our programs in Newsweek’s special home schooling issue, on “Talk of the Nation,” with Ray Suarez, in the Calvert School’s catalog, or through your own homeschooling network. We offer a variety of resources and programs for eligible homeschoolers.
Students who want to participate in our academic programs must establish eligibility. Here’s how to get started: To be eligible for the CTYOnline or CTY Summer Programs students in grades 2-8 should first participate in one of CTY’s Talent Searches. They identify, assess, and recognize students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities. Students qualify for the Talent Searches by scoring at or above the 95th percentile on a nationally normed, standardized aptitude or achievement test or by submitting a parent nomination form. To find out more, visit the Talent Search home. For grades K-1, students establish eligibility for CTYOnline through alternative tests. Summer Programs Summer Programs are available to students 7th grade and above whose SAT scores place them in the top 2% of their age mates, and to students 2nd through 6th grades whose PLUS or SCAT scores place them in the top 1% of their age mates. Request a catalog. CTYOnline CTYOnline offers year-round, flexible courses to eligible students in grades K-12 in writing, mathematics, science, and computer science. Integrating sound pedagogy, solid curricula, and expert, responsive tutors, our programs serve a community of independent learners who share common intellectual bonds. We provide rigorous courses for highly motivated students. Request a catalog or brochure.
All homeschooled students may take advantage of these resources:CTY produces Imagine, an award-winning magazine full of information about educational programs and resources to enrich the lives of students in grades 7-12. Published five times a year, Imagine helps students identify options in school and beyond to help satisfy their intellectual curiosity and need for greater academic challenge. CTY’s Diagnostic & Counseling Center provides individualized assessment and educational planning services for students in pre-kindergarten through college. Our goal is to help families and educators develop optimal education plans for students on the basis of their demonstrated abilities, knowledge, and interests. For more about how the Diagnostic & Counseling Center can help homeschooled children, please look here. CTY Family Academic Programs are designed for Talent Search participants and their families, with the intention of exposing talented students to the exciting range of possibilities included in a broad-based education and life-long learning program. Family Academic Programs for younger participants aim to support and supplement standard school curricula and keep students interested in a wide range of subjects. Programs for older students incorporate the same principles with an introduction to making college and career choices. In an effort to boost middle school math achievement, Johns Hopkins University researchers are spending a great deal of time in a magical, pixilated place called Descartes’ Cove. This innovative CD-ROM learning environment helps youngsters develop higher-level math skills including geometry, logic, and number theory. It is a collaborative virtual space, accessible via the Web and CD-ROM, where students can explore the farthest reaches of their mathematical reasoning by solving real-world puzzles and problems. Development of Descartes’ Cove is funded by corporate grants from AT&T and the Toyota USA Foundation.
